Recreation, Sport and Community Facility Master Planning

Project Info:

Holmes Dyer was engaged by the City of Marion to prepare master plans for the future development and use of a number of key recreation, sporting and community precincts, including

  • Cosgrove Hall and Graham Watts Playground
  • Marion Leisure and Fitness Centre
  • Marion Sports Precinct (Marion Oval and Club Marion)
  • Glandore Oval
  • Perry Barr Farm Reserve
  • Northern Community Hub

Each precinct involved a review of the physical characteristics of respective sites, the availability and required recreation, sporting and community facilities, the conducting of staff workshops to collect and test idea, and the preparation of concept options for review and refinement prior to the presentation to Elected Members for resolution of the preferred master planning outcomes.

In some instances, we attended user group workshops to better understand the interplay between a range of sports and community users who may have competing interests for land and facilities.

A number of projects required resolution of site access arrangements and on-site car parking provisions, while two of the ovals required dimensional modifications to better meet playing surface standards. Changes to internal vehicle movements on selected sites sought to improve safety for pedestrian movement, while the Leisure and Fitness Centre site was identified for internal-external facing café facilities to serve both facility users and passing pedestrians and cyclist on the adjacent bikeway.

Other features included opening up views to the parks, creation of performance amphitheatres, expansion of building footprints to meet identified additional demand for court space and hall space, and new pedestrian links to improve accessibility.

The Northern Community Hub Master Plan involved the identification of the land uses and floorspace requirements for a new hub to service the north eastern part of the Council area.
