Mental Health Housing in Regional Victoria (VIC)

Project Info:

Holmes Dyer has assisted a CHP in its preparation of a proposal to deliver 31 dwellings across 6 sites in Outer Melbourne and country Victoria for occupation by tenants suffering from mental health issues.

Holmes Dyer has designed the housing and prepared the site concepts for these projects, having regard to more than 100 design criteria addressing such factors as:

  • Outdoor spaces to be clearly defined with high level discreet security and privacy.
  • Communal spaces to have semi-private and public spaces that create a clear and gradual transition between private and public spaces.
  • Housing site surrounds to have clear pathways and circulation routes to provide clear wayfinding and line of sight.
  • Consideration of trauma-informed design principles into all spaces of the dwelling to prevent triggering events and allow for recovery.
  • Dwellings to include sincere spaces, meaning a space with items that are exactly as they appear.
  • Designs to exceed Livable Housing Australia’s Gold standard.
  • Dwellings to include good natural and artificial lighting with sense-sensitive design to allow for a comfortable environment, avoiding harsh fluorescent lighting.
  • Dwellings to have minimal visual noise and clear wayfinding.
  • Dwellings to include partial visual access to outdoors areas, such as gardens or courtyards, with reduced opportunity for other residents to be overlooked.
